English as an Additional Language (EAL)

While our language of instruction is English and we enrol EAL learners from K1 to Grade 12.

Formal EAL instruction are available for students enrolled in Grades 1 to 12. These classes are delivered by a specialist teacher, and are designed to support learners who have had less exposure to English, or who speak English as a second, third or even fourth language, to acquire skills in English that will enable them to thrive in the curriculum.

EAL instruction provides language support for students who will benefit from specialist English language instruction to use English more fluently and accurately for communication and study purposes. In addition to this instruction, there is some provision, based on needs, for extra, individual EAL support and for EAL teachers to work in classes with EAL learners in other areas of the curriculum. While our EAL programme is delivered by specialist teachers, teachers across the curriculum work to support the acquisition of English.

This factsheet descibes the provision on both campuses, and is summaried below.

Kindergarten 1 and 2

EAL learners participate in the classroom timetable with their peers. At this stage, all learners are gaining literacy skills in a broader sense and therefore the skills being learned through exposure in the classroom to the Literacy curriculum for English serve as a foundation for EAL learners as well.

All students join Language Other Than English (LOTE) classes as timetabled.

Grades 1—5 

To support EAL learners in the acquisition of English language skills to meet the demands of studying all subjects in English, an EAL course is offered to students in Grade 1 and above in place of the timetabled Language Other Than English (LOTE) lessons. These small group lessons support students to develop skills in English at a level that will enable them to transition out of the EAL classes when they are ready and join the LOTE class of their choice.

Students are assessed to ascertain their current level of English before being accepted into the EAL programme.

 

Kindergarten 1 and 2

EAL learners are accommodated within their normal classes. 

Grades 2—5 

Students are accommodated within normal classes or given extra help on an individual-needs basis to develop their academic language skills.

Students select a LOTE from the available options.

 

Grades 6, 7 and 8

Currently, two courses are provided with flexible content according to the students’ needs:

  • Additional English (AENG) is offered in place of a Language Other Than English (LOTE) in Grades 6, 7 and 8 in order to improve students’ language proficiency and academic reading and writing skills to meet the demands of studying all subjects in English. Lessons focus on the development of listening, speaking, reading, and writing and include vocabulary and grammar.
  • English as an Additional Language (EAL) is offered in place of English in Grades 7 and 8. In these lessons students study a variety of intensive reading skills and complete a challenging academic writing task, such as an essay. In addition, regular extensive reading in EAL encourages students to develop and maintain a personal reading habit for increased language fluency.

In Grade 6, English is taught as a combined English-Humanities course and our EAL students take Additional English in place of LOTE lessons.

In Grades 7 and 8, EAL learners follow EAL lessons in place of English lessons, and, in some cases, may also follow AENG lessons in place of LOTE lessons.

 

Grades 6, 7 and 8

Students are enrolled in English as an Additional Language (EAL) lessons rather than a Language Other Than English (LOTE).

EAL supports students in developing the academic and social language skills that they need to succeed across the curriculum. Explicit language instruction in reading, writing, listening and speaking ensures that students are successful in all facets of school life.

The EAL teacher is in regular contact with subject teachers to provide support in the EAL classroom, where students may need scaffolded or differentiated lessons to access specific lessons, assessments, or tasks.

Grades 9, 10 IGCSE 

EAL learners take an EAL course that is designed for students whose first language is not English, but who are taught in English. The main focus is on language development, including preparation for the (I)GCSE examination in English as a Second Language and preparation for studies in English in the IBDP in English B, and possibly in English A.

Grade 10 FIB (Foundation IB)

This is a language acquisition and development course for students whose first language is not Englisgh. It supports students to join the IBDP English B Higher Level course, and gives some preparation for the IBDP English A courses.
Students also select a LOTE from the available options.

 

Grades 9, 10 IGCSE 

The English as a Second Language (ESL) course is for students whose mother tongue is a language other than English. The course develops global literacy skills for academic and general communication, and for the requirements of the (I)GCSE ESL examination. Students experience a broad range of literary and non-literary text types to develop critical response and analysis skills. Students whose English language progresses to near-native level can transfer to the (I)GCSE English course. Students also select a LOTE from the available options.

Grade 10 FIB (Foundation IB)

Our FIB EAL course prepares students whose best language is a language other than English, for the study of IBDP English B. Students develop language skills for academic and general communication, and are exposed to a range of text types to support the development of analytical skills. Students also select a LOTE from the available options.

 

Grade 11 entry

EAL learners follow the IBDP English B Group 2 course—and can thereby gain a bilingual diploma.
