Grade 11 student clinches bronze medal for Philippines in Asian Fencing Cadet Circuit

UWCSEA East Grade 11 student, Samantha Beatrice Sayson, clinches bronze medal representing the Philippines in the Asian Fencing Cadet Circuit held last Aug 25 at the OCBC Fencing Arena in Singapore. She finished 3rd (bronze) in Women's Epee Under 17 Category among competitors from across Asia including Japan, HK, Taipei, Singapore, Malaysia, China, Korea, Australia, Macau and Thailand.
In the preliminary round, Samantha ranked 7th out of 32 with an 8 win-3 loss record. But she fought her way against SGP fencers in the round of 32 (15-10) and 16 (15-13). Then she beat a HK fencer in the quarterfinals (15-11) before bowing out to another SGP fencer in the semi-finals (11-15).
She also finished Top 8 (6th out of 42) in the Taipei leg of the circuit a week before. These strong results put her on track to be in the top 10 cadet ranking for women's epee category in Asia. Next up will be the penultimate leg of the circuit for epee in HK this December. Then culminating in the Asian Junior and Cadet Fencing Championships to be held in Jakarta early 2020.
